We all have that hipster friend, whom we love, but buying books for them can be a daunting task. It’s difficult to gauge the right amount of book-induced existential crisis required by the Hipster. So I’m here with a few recommendations that are sure to please your tartan scarf-clad friend.
1 – The Secret History by Donna Tartt
2 – The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
3 – The Magicians by Lev Grossman
Okay, I know this may seem like a odd choice to get a Hipsiter, but TRUST ME, there is no fantasy novel out there more hipsterific than The Magicians. It’s about a bunch of depressed, borderline alcoholic Hipster magicians struggling with the tedium of everyday life as a magician with no evil to vanquish. This will have your Hipster buddy wetting their super skinnies with excitement! Get it here: The Book Depository, Amazon.
4 – House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
No list of hipster books would be complete without mention of this little… whatever it is … a book about a manuscript about a film about a house that’s bigger on this inside than the outside. This completely brilliant but completely obnoxious book is a cult classic. With it’s unusual format and bold pretentiousness, giving a copy of this to your local hipster will make you more popular than Persian fairy floss. Get it here: The Book Depository, Amazon.
5 – If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller by Italo Calvino
One Word: Meta. This book is the king of meta books. The first line is literally “You are about to begin reading Italo Calvino’s new novel if on a winter’s night a traveler.” Yeah. Like I said, Meta. You know any Hipster will LOVE this, and will think you have the best taste in books. You will get so many Cool Points (note: Cool Points may be deducted if you are found to be using the term “Cool Points”). Get it here: The Book Depository, Amazon.
No hipsters were harmed in the making of this post (just slightly mocked in a loving way.)
