Hello everyone, and sorry again for missing a day, but I have been pretty sick for a couple of days. Anyway, I’m okay now and here with a bunch of Dystopian recommendations to inspire the future Leader of the Rebellion that you know. Also I know the photos are a bit weird, but I wasn’t feeling particularly inspired and I really love my gingerbread garland and this chair – which I totally made (well, assembled, but did so better than my husband and that’s what matters). Anyway… Books!
1 – The Hunger Games – Ridiculously fluoro editions
Okay, yeah. The Hunger Games is a pretty obvious choice when it comes to dystopia, but these super bright fluoro editions (which are actually much brighter than in this photo) is a little less obvious, and just so awesome. Get them here: The Book Depository: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay.
2 – Red Rising by Pierce Brown
Now this book is quite similar to The Hunger Games, except it’s far more grown-up (bloody and violent) and set on Mars. In my opinion, this series is far superior to The Hunger Games. I’m sure some people would disagree, but they are totally wrong because I say so. The writing is gorgeous and intense. The world is lively and complex and it has a much stronger sci-fi element. I just love it. Get it here: The Book Depository, Amazon.
3 – Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neill
Now this feminist satire is truly something special (and horrifying) and everyone should read it. It’s been described as The Handmaid’s Tale meets Mean Girls, and that is really accurate. This book actually game me nightmares (Which Louise O’Neill personally apologised for on twitter), but I’m so glad I read it. It’s so in your face and fantastic. Buy this for everyone because they need to read it! Get it here: The Book Depository, Amazon.
4 – The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
If you don’t know how much I love this series, then you don’t know me very well (and should say hello to remedy that!). This is a wnderful dystopian fantasy novel set in a crazy old-timey future where people with powers are captured and killed by the government. It has one of the most original and vivid worlds I’ve ever encountered in a book. I’m planning on buying this one for some friends for Christmas myself this year. You can get it here: The Book Depository, Amazon.
5 – Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury – Harper Voyager Classics edition
Any dystopian recommendation list needs at least one classic, and this one, being about books  (more accurately, a society where books are illegal), is the perfect bookish gift (Ray Bradbury is always the perfect bookish gift). This clothbound hardcover edition is also beautiful and I can’t see how anyone wouldn’t be super excited to receive this. I don’t think there is a more beautiful copy out there (maybe the Folio Society version, but I can’t afford that), and you can get this one here: The Book Depository, Amazon.
So those are my dystopian recommendations, I know there are tons more out there (which I would love to hear about in the comments), but these are just a few that are close to my heart. I hope you enjoyed them and will join me for more recommendations tomorrow.
