Book Review: Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

I was sent this book by Bloombury Australia for review… but at the time I hadn’t actually read books two or three in the series. So I have been marathoning this series over the past couple of weeks and I have enjoyed it so so so much! You can see my reviews for Crown of Midnight here, and Heir of Fire here, and my Recom-Monday-Tions post about Throne of Glass here. This is now one of my absolute favourite series!

It will be difficult to review this without spoiling anything in the series, but I will try.

This series gets better with each consecutive book you read, and Queen of Shadows is by far my favourite. I absolutely couldn’t put it down. There was not a single moment where I felt bored or where my mind wandered to other things. It is just completely all-consuming.

There are some new characters in this book who are absolutely delightful, and we finally meet Arrobyn, the King of Assassins that Celaena used to work for, for the first time. I think he would be really good friends with Jaxon Hall from The Bone Season Series. Either really good friends or complete enemies… anyway…. We also get to uncover more about Celaena’s past.

Although I didn’t think it was possible, Celaena becomes even more bad ass in this book. She just keeps getting more and more awesome. I would have liked more Manon Blackbeak in this book, but honestly, I would like a whole series about the witches, so there will never be enough for me.

There were a few points where the switching of perspectives was done a bit clunkily and it took me a second to realise that it was the same events but from a different character’s POV, so I stopped and was like ‘wait… but she already did that thing’, and then you realise that it’s just gone back in time a little. But this happens like twice at the most I think, but hey, it’s really the only piece of criticism I could give because it is SO DAMN GOOD.

If you have read the rest of this series, you’re in for a treat with this fourth book. If you haven’t read this series, you probably should. You’ll love it!

Can I rate this 6/5 stars? Celaena would. Celaena would insist on it.

  1. Awesome review, Tina! I love that you managed to share your thoughts so well without sharing any potential spoilers at all. Admittedly, I’ve been wary about reading any reviews for Queen of Shadows, but I’m glad I read yours and even happier that you loved it. I actually just finished Heir of Fire yesterday and I can’t freaking wait to read this one!

    • Thanks. It is quite difficult to do a review on a sequel without any spoilers, and especially with this series due to all the secrets. You will love this one! It’s just amazing.
