“Like most misery, it started with apparent happiness.”
This book. This. Book.
I can’t even count the number of friends who count this book as their absolute favourite and when you read it, it’s not hard to tell why. It is stunningly beautiful.
The Book Thief, as the name suggests is the story of young Liesl, a girl with slight literary kleptomania, growing up in Nazi Germany. What makes this story truly unique is the fact that it is narrated by Death.
“I wanted to tell the book thief many things, about beauty and brutality. But what could I tell her about those things that she didn’t already know? I wanted to explain that I am constantly overestimating and underestimating the human race-that rarely do I ever simply estimate it. I wanted to ask her how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant.”
If this book is still on your TBR, you should bump it up immediately.
And don’t forget the tissues.

Why do we love the things that hurt us so? For some strange reason we love them the most of all…
